Professional Development

These groups offer opportunities for development, connection and ways to make an impact on the profession and communities. Some groups offer "micro-volunteering", short and possibly one-time, but impactful projects, throughout the year.

Purpose: To empower young professionals by fostering professional development, leadership, and meaningful community involvement, while offering opportunities to build your network, engage with the profession, and inspire the next generation through student mentorship and promotion of the profession.

Meets: 3 times per year for an average of 1.5 hours both in-person and virtually.

Purpose: To champion the advancement of women in accounting by supporting learning and leadership initiatives, recognizing outstanding achievements through MICPA's Women to Watch awards, and fostering the growth and success of women in the profession.

Meets: 2+ times per year for an average of 1 hour both in-person and virtually.

Specialized Expertise

These groups are dedicated to fostering a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and professional growth in specialized areas. By leveraging the expertise of our members, these groups provide valuable feedback to MICPA and initiatives that shape the profession's future.

 

 

Purpose: To enhance the quality and relevance of accounting and auditing practices, this group reviews exposure drafts from the FASB, GASB, AICPA, and other authoritative bodies, providing well-informed comments that represent the profession. In addition, the group collaborates to develop A&A content for MICPA's educational programs.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Purpose: To support the regulatory framework and compliance within the cannabis industry. Members collaborate with the CRA and other regulatory bodies to provide feedback on notices, statutes, and regulations, aiming to clarify and improve these for the benefit of all stakeholders. In addition, the group develops educational resources and programs to assist licensees in understanding and adhering to regulations.

Meets: 3 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Purpose: To provide accounting educators with opportunities to connect with peers, share best practices, engage in professional development, and shape the agenda for educator-focused events. Additionally, the group oversees the nomination process for the MICPA and AICPA Educator Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to accounting education.

Meets: 3 times per year for an average of 2 hours both in-person and virtually.

Purpose: To evaluate and comment on proposed federal taxation rules and regulations, engage in legislative issues, provide specialized education, and in accordance with our strategic plan, foster relationships with key stakeholders.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Purpose: To develop and promote close relationships with financial institutions and regulators by exploring mutual interests, discussing trends and developments in financial reporting, accounting, and regulation, and collaborating with regulators to stay informed on changes and provide input on the profession's educational needs.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Purpose: To support CPA firms with smaller staff by fostering collaboration and engagement through educational events, connection building, and continuous communication. This group aims to be the primary resource for smaller practices in meeting their clients' needs. Additionally, the group organizes bi-monthly Small Firm Practitioners Virtual Roundtables, and a subcommittee plans the annual Small Firm Practitioners Conference.

Meets: 4 times per year for an average of 2 hours both in-person and virtually.

Purpose: To coordinate SALT education programs, liaise with tax administrators and legislative committees, analyze tax developments, and contribute articles while reviewing tax forms and regulations. This group develops interpretations and proposals, collaborates with relevant organizations, and assists in planning tax-related programs. It also monitors state and local tax developments, current litigation, and specific problem areas, taking action to inform legislators, members, and other stakeholders as necessary.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Committees

Committees provide ongoing leadership and strategic guidance in key areas essential to MICPA’s success. Whether you're ensuring financial integrity, driving advocacy efforts, or strengthening member engagement, your expertise helps guide key decisions and initiatives. Gain valuable experience and leave a lasting impact on the association and the CPA community.

 

 

Purpose: To assist the MICPA Board of Directors in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities for the financial reporting process, the system of internal control, and the audit process.

Must have audit experience to join.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Purpose: To assist the Board of Directors in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities for monitoring the financial health of the MICPA; that its assets are protected, and its resources are used appropriately.

Meets: 3 times per year for an average of 2 hours virtually.

Purpose: To manage and drive MICPA’s legislative initiatives, this group, composed of regional representatives, utilizes their knowledge about the CPA profession to provide insight.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 1.5 hours virtually.

Purpose: To collaborate with other committees and member resource groups (MRGs) to maximize efforts, particularly in membership recruitment and retention. Serving as an advisory group, this group provides feedback on member benefit programs and promotions and plans connection builders such as the annual MRG Leadership meetings to foster communication and collaboration among all MRGs.

Meets: 4 times per year for an average of 2 hours both in-person and virtually.

Purpose: To provide technical assistance in administering the AICPA’s peer review program in Michigan, monitor review teams, and examine, evaluate, and approve all reports issued under this program, ensuring the highest standards of quality and compliance in the peer review process.

Meets: Monthly for an average of 2 hours + additional research time virtually.

Purpose: To strengthen the CPA profession as an active constituency by supporting candidates who align with MICPA's values, ensuring elected officials prioritize safeguarding the integrity of the profession. The committee members represent various regions of the state and professional service areas, offering diverse perspectives that reflect the broader MICPA membership.

Meets: 2 times per year for an average of 1.5 hours virtually.

Purpose: To encourage ethical and credible conduct by CPAs, upholding and enforcing the Code of Professional Conduct. The committee reviews ethics cases and inquiries, voting on the appropriate actions to be taken to ensure compliance and maintain the integrity of the profession.

Meets: 8 times per year for an average of 2 hours + additional research time virtually.
