MICPA High School Leaders Conference at Oakland University Exposes Students to Careers in Accounting

by MICPA | Nov 13, 2015   ()

“I look forward to bringing my students to the High School Leaders Conference every year,” said Kathleen Ford, a teacher at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester Hills. “They get inspired and open their minds to considering a career in accounting, and they are noticeably more passionate when we return to the classroom.”

More than 240 students and teachers from 16 high schools across southeast Michigan spent the day at Oakland University on Thursday, Nov. 12 interacting with CPAs to learn about the many, and sometimes surprising, career opportunities there are within the field of accounting.

“I didn’t know how many different things you can do,” said Delaney McRell from South Lyon High School. “I especially enjoyed hearing Josh Vieth from Plante Moran talk about all the varied things he does as a CPA. It makes me think I should consider becoming one myself.”

Since 2001, MICPA High School Leaders Conferences have brought students together with professionals to show them the value of the CPA credential and the amazing and varied things accountants do in today’s business world. For example, students heard about a day in the life of Detroit Red Wings CFO Paul MacDonald, who even brought along his four National Hockey League championship rings.

They also heard from college students about the transition from high school to college. “This is such a great event for high school kids,” said MICPA student member and Oakland University student Kim Deyak, who is finishing up her masters of accountancy in December. “I think exposing students to the profession early on will lead more to consider accounting as a career,” added Deyak, who sat on a panel with fellow MICPA student members Dan Wysocki and Nick Boni, who also attend Oakland University.

The MICPA holds High School Leaders Conferences each year at Oakland University, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University. Contact MICPA Membership Director David Johnson for more information.
