Tax Season: Ready. Set. Go.
The nation’s 2016 individual income tax filing season opens today, Jan. 19, with the IRS expecting more than 150 million tax returns to be filed this year. In coordination with state revenue departments and the tax industry, the IRS released the first in a series of YouTube videos that provide people with tips for protecting their tax and financial data.

MSU Extension: Helping Michigan Cities Become Fiscally Fit
Michigan State University Extension is offering a new resource to cities that want help with managing finances and budgets. Last week, the university formally unveiled the Center for Local Government Finance and Policy. The center will offer fiscal sustainability workshops, customized consultancy services, applied research on municipal governance and fiscal issues and an annual fiscal health report on each of Michigan’s cities, counties and townships.

Filing Season Update on Identity Protection PINs
The IRS has begun mailing follow-up letters to taxpayers noting that the Identity Protection (IP) PIN they received in a prior mailing is valid despite the incorrect reference to the year. Please be aware the IP PIN listed on the CP 01A notice dated Jan. 4, 2016, is valid for use on individual tax returns filed in 2016. The earlier notice incorrectly indicates the IP PIN issued is to be used for filing the 2014 tax return when it should be used for the 2015 tax return.

U.S. Treasury offers myRA, a Free No-Fee, Retirement Savings Option
