Legacy of Learning: Donor Makes Bequest for Accounting Scholarships

William Harvey’s dedication to accounting students will continue long after he is gone.  That’s the way he has planned it through a bequest to the Michigan Accountancy Foundation that will provide several scholarships for future CPAs.

Harvey started his own career as a CPA in the banking industry, then spent over four decades as an accounting educator before retiring in 2008. Harvey’s academic career began at the University of Detroit; then he taught for 38 years at Henry Ford College where he also served as accounting department head for many of those years.

“My involvement in education and working with young people for over 40 years has endeared me to their goals and success,” said Harvey. “It was so inspiring to see what the students have become.”

As a CPA, Harvey is concerned about the impact of the high cost of a college education today.

“The numbers are staggering and students are coming out of college with mountains of debt,” he said. “It’s difficult for them to have families and buy houses because they are burdened with debt.

“The future of our profession is these young people, so I want to do what I can to help in that educational process.”

A longtime active member of the MICPA, Harvey also serves as a trustee of the Michigan Accountancy Foundation and sits on the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee. The MAF presents more than 20 scholarships annually to accounting students entering their fifth/graduate year.

“Bill Harvey has touched the lives of thousands of young people and inspired them to become CPAs,” said Stephen H. Epstein, chair of the MAF Board of Trustees. “We are so grateful that his legacy will continue for many years to come through his generous bequest to the Michigan Accountancy Foundation.”
