Business Services Enhanced on Michigan Treasury Online
Several recent enhancements to the Michigan Treasury Online website make it easier for Michigan businesses to conduct taxpayer transactions online. Effective immediately, businesses can upload their W-2s and other wage statements, request fuel credit refunds and perform other paperless taxpayer duties through the updated website. READ MORE

Bureau of Professional Licensing: Set Up or Update Your MICPA CPE Tracker Now
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs issued a notice last week that it has streamlined the license renewal process to 100% online renewals for this year. The MICPA CPE Tracker is an essential part of the process – allowing CPAs a convenient service to save continuing education certifications and information. CPAs will simply provide their Tracker code as part of the renewal process. Log in to the MICPA website to update your Tracker, or set up a new account here. Review CPE requirements online.

Michigan Tax Tribunal Issues Appeals Reminder
The Michigan Tax Tribunal issued a reminder yesterday to property owners and/or their representatives that May 31 is the deadline for filing valuation appeals involving commercial real property, industrial real property, developmental real property, commercial personal property, industrial personal property or utility personal property valuation appeals. Further, July 31 is the statutory deadline for filing 2017 petitions with the Tribunal for property classified as agricultural real property, residential real property, timber- cutover real property, or agricultural personal property. W-2 Filing Deadline Change
A new federal law moves up the W-2 filing deadline for employers and small businesses to Jan. 31. The new Jan. 31 filing deadline also applies to certain Forms 1099-MISC, reporting non-employee compensation such as payments to independent contractors. The new law makes it easier for the IRS to find and stop refund fraud. It also delays some taxpayer refunds. Those taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit won’t see refunds until Feb.15, at the earliest. READ MORE

Participate in Form W-2 Testing
The IRS and payroll firms are adding a “verification code” this filing season to 50 million Forms W-2. This is part of a test to fight fraud and protect businesses and taxpayers from identity theft. As a tax preparer, you can help by looking for the code and entering the 16 digits when prompted. This is for electronic returns only. READ MORE

IRS Eliminates No-Rule Policy for Business-Purpose and Device-Rule Issues
The Tax Adviser reports a welcome development for taxpayers: the IRS says it will once again issue private letter rulings under Sec. 355 on whether a spinoff transaction meets the business-purpose requirement and is not a device to distribute earnings and profits, both prerequisites for tax-free reorganizations that the IRS stopped ruling on more than 10 years ago. Feed the Pig, AICPA’s Financial Literacy Campaign, has teamed up with DreamWorks to launch a line of PSAs ahead of their new movie, The Boss Baby. This PSA and its collateral creative (web banners, out-of-home ads, etc.) will be distributed nationally. Additionally, Feed the Pig partnered with inspirational news site, Upworthy, to launch a new series of articles to increase personal financial knowledge.
