AICPA and CIMA Partner to Power Public and Management Accounting 
The collaboration between AICPA and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) that began last summer now has a new brand and significant momentum internationally. The two associations have partnered to provide enhanced resources and benefits for members, employers and the public, all of which advance the strength of the CPA. As recently as January, the new association resisted mandatory audit firm rotation in South Africa on behalf of 650,000 members and students. And last month it launched a new website and brand campaign. READ MORE 

April is Financial Literacy Month 
Since 2003, the United States has recognized April as Financial Literacy Month as a way to emphasize the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy financial habits. Federal PCAOB Bill Reintroduced  
U.S. Senate Bill 610, which would make the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s (PCAOB) disciplinary proceedings more open to the public, was recently reintroduced by U.S. Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA). 

For Small Business Startups: New Option to Claim Research Credit 
The IRS issued interim guidance explaining how eligible small businesses can take advantage of a new option enabling them to apply part or all of a research credit against payroll tax liability instead of income tax liability. Before 2016, taxpayers could only take the research credit against income tax liability. READ MORE 

IRS Enforcement Actions Decline in 2016 
The IRS audited just over one million tax returns of individuals in FY 2016, down almost 16 percent from the prior year’s total of 1.2 million, according the recently released 2016 IRS Data Book. The annual publication provides a snapshot of agency activities including information about returns filed, taxes collected, enforcement, taxpayer assistance, the IRS budget and workforce as well as other data. READ MORE

Tax Pros: Be Alert for Schemes as Filing Season Deadline Approaches 
The IRS, Michigan Department of Treasury and the tax industry again warned tax professionals to beware of phishing email scams claiming to be from IRS e-Services and of schemes in general as the April 18 deadline nears. The IRS noted a particular surge related to a phishing email scam that seeks to steal practitioners’ usernames and passwords for IRS e-Services. The subject lines on these scam emails vary but they generally are related to e-Service account closures. READ MORE
