Komen Race for the Cure Looking for CPA Board Volunteer

New members will serve a two-year term with option to be nominated and re-elected for two additional terms for a maximum of six consecutive years of service. Board member terms are staggered in two-year intervals.

  • Attendance at all board meetings is required. Missing more than two meetings in one year undermines a board member’s ability to stay informed and be actively engaged.
  • Ten full board meetings a year and a retreat.


  • Able to participate in training and development opportunities, demonstrate leadership qualities and act as a goodwill ambassador.
  • Contribute an annual, personal, financial gift. The goal is 100% board participation at the $100 level or more.
  • Provide expertise in at least one of the following areas: financial management, fundraising, donor development, law, human resource management, volunteer management, administration, PR, marketing, communications, research, sales or healthcare.

Roles and Responsibilities of a board member:

  • Demonstrate an interest in the Komen Promise by participating in Affiliate activities including advocacy, public policy, governance and strategic events.
  • Ensure the Affiliate complies with the Komen Operating Guidelines, the Affiliate Policies and considers, approves, supports and reviews policies specific to Komen Detroit Participate in developing a strategic plan, annual tactical plan and assess board accomplishments.
  • Provide fiduciary oversight with support from the finance manager, board treasurer and finance committee including approving an annual budget, reviewing financial reports, supporting development objectives, and ensuring the Affiliate’s organizational structure and budget are appropriate to successfully carry out the work of the Affiliate.
  • Ensure the Affiliate and Board are operating legally and meet all applicable legal requirements.
  • Support the efforts of the Executive Director and provide constructive feedback on her performance annually.
  • Participate in at least one sub-committee of the board per year.
