MICPA Elects New Board Officers and Directors

The Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants has elected Alan Young as chair of its 2017–18 board of directors and also named other officers and three new members-at-large to its board of directors.

Young, of West Bloomfield, is the founder and CEO at Alan C. Young and Associates PC in Detroit. A member of the board since 2009, he will serve a one-year term as its chair.

Young brings 40 years of experience as a CPA to his new role. He founded Alan C. Young and Associates in 1983 and serves industries like government, nonprofit and corporations. Young is an active member of various organizations such as the Cass Technical High School Alumni Board, the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and board of directors for the First Independence Bank of Detroit. He has also been appointed to the Michigan State Board of Accountancy.

Other officers elected for this year include:

  • Robert Johnson, chair-elect – Johnson, of Clinton Township, is vice president of finance and global controller for Dynatrace.
  • David Echelbarger, treasurer – Echelbarger, of Allegan, is president of Echelbarger Himebaugh Tamm & Co. PC in Grand Rapids.
  • Frank Maselli, secretary  – Maselli, of Rochester, is partner at Assurance Services, Ernst and Young in Detroit.

The board’s executive committee also includes Betsy Meter, immediate past chair and Stephanie Bergeron, past chair. Meter, of Beverly Hills, is an audit partner with KPMG LLP in Detroit. Bergeron, of Birmingham, is president and CEO at Bluepoint Partners in Birmingham. 

New directors are:

  • Lorena Bencsik, of Ferndale, is an accounting consultant with Robert Half Management Resources. She has industry experience in the automotive, education, property management, health care and nonprofit sectors. Bencsik has been a member of the MICPA since 2003. She has chaired the Communications Task Force since 2009 and now serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Task Force, among others.
  • Andy Bittinger, of Birmingham, is an assurance partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Detroit. Bittinger brings international experience to the MICPA, working closely with clients to develop implementation of pan-European shared service centers as well as development of audit approaches to support both corporate and statutory reporting. Bittinger has been involved in high school leadership initiatives with the MICPA, working to encourage the next generation to consider a career as a CPA. He currently serves on the board of the MICPA Political Action Committee.
  • George Salloum, of Livonia, has served as the CFO at Chamberlain Marketing since 2000. He provides leadership in all facets of financial and risk management, operations, tax compliance and employee benefits matters. Salloum has more than 25 years of experience in both public and private accounting and has been a member of the MICPA since 1991. As a member of the MICPA, Salloum serves on the Financial Literacy Task Force and the Membership Committee. He has also been active in the CPA Ambassador Program and has served as vice president of the Michigan Accountancy Foundation since 2016.

Each officer will serve a one-year term, while each new board director will serve a three-year term, beginning Sept. 1.
