Troy, Mich., Nov. 7, 2018 – The Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) today announced Curtis Ruppal, CPA and partner at Plante Moran, PPLC, as this year’s winner of the Thomas M. Hoatlin Award.

The Thomas M. Hoatlin Award is presented annually in memory of Michigan’s first Single Business Tax Administrator and Revenue Commissioner, Thomas Hoatlin. Tom was a visionary who cultivated a positive relationship between the MICPA and the Michigan Department of Treasury and the award honors the MICPA State & Local Tax Task Force member who most significantly embodies Tom’s philosophy.

As a member of the State and Local Tax Task Force in 1998, Curtis Ruppal has engaged on behalf of the MICPA and profession at large with the Michigan Department of Treasury. Curtis has been a valuable addition to conversations with Treasury on the state implications of federal tax reform. Due largely in part to his contribution, the MICPA has continued to enhance its relationship with the Department and provide feedback on notices and administrative bulletins released by Treasury. Curtis regularly attends legislative events on the west side of the state, building relationships and serving as a resource to elected officials.

Curtis Ruppal leads the State and Local Tax Group at Plante Moran where he specializes in providing clients with multistate tax consulting services, including implementation of solutions to minimize income and franchise taxes, sales and use taxes, property taxes, and other state and local taxes. He also provides taxpayer representation in state voluntary disclosure negations and tax audit and controversy proceedings.
