Key Questions:

How do you determine your fee and how much does it cost?
The preparer should be transparent with their fee structure and the cost to prepare your return should not be based on the amount of your refund.

How do you protect my personal and financial data?
Preparers must have a written security plan as required by the IRS.

Will you be available outside of tax season if I need help?
Preparers should be available year-round to help you as needed.

Will my refund come directly to me?
Refunds should come to you directly, and direct deposit is the fastest and safest way to get your refund.

How long will it take to receive my completed return after I provide all documents?
The preparer should set clear expectations

If the IRS or Michigan Treasury contacts me, will you help me respond?
The answer should be ‘yes’ because you must respond if this happens. The preparer should assist in responding to notices or questions related to the return they prepared.

Will I receive a copy of my return and my original documents back?
Yes.

Will you sign my return and provide proof of your Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)?
Yes.

Do you hold a CPA license, credential, or training? May I see proof of current status?

How do you stay up to date on changing tax laws?
The best answer is through continuing education.

Note: A “no” answer to professional credential or continuing education questions doesn’t always mean a preparer is unqualified but credentials and ongoing education are signs of professionalism and accountability.

Protect Yourself from Scams

Unfortunately, tax season also brings scammers. Remember:

  • The IRS and Michigan Treasury will never demand payment over the phone.
  • Do not share your Social Security number or bank information unless you know the source is legitimate.
  • Report suspicious activity to the IRS website.
